Custom Made Acoustic Guitars: Some Facts

#1: Different woods produce different tonal properties and these properties vary from maker to maker and guitar to guitar. And of course, beauty is in the ear of the one who is listening. In other words, the woods used in the custom made acoustic guitars you’ll find here indicate something about sound but certainly not everything. Whether the wood is mahogany, Brazilian, Koa, rosewood, ebony, Sitka spruce, maple or something else altogether, its effect on the final sound of the guitar will depend on the maker, the guitar, the player and the listener. The finish applied to the guitar will also affect the sound.

#2: The cost of a handmade guitar is determined by many factors. Materials used in the construction of custom acoustic guitars may be premium woods or may simply be very difficult to find (as with Brazilian rosewood). In addition, as opposed to acoustic guitars that are produced on an assembly line, instruments fashioned by talented luthiers will take much longer to produce. Each piece of wood is selected carefully to support the luthier’s intentions for the final tonal structure. Ornamentation will also affect the final price of an aesthetically pleasing instrument.

#3: Tone and projection are affected by the body style of a guitar and while the form of the instrument is important, so is functionality. The guitar selected, especially when it’s an heirloom quality instrument that will command a higher price, must be comfortable in the player’s hands.
